Tips To Help You Start Budgeting Money Better
Millions of Americans are struggling every day to make ends meet. Paying bills and buying groceries gets harder every week. There has to be a way to meet the needs of the family. Budgeting money is the best way to meet those needs. There are many little steps you can take to get your money under control. You will have to have patience, be practical, and do some planning. These are all fairly simple things to do in order to reach financial stability.
The first thing you need to do is make a budget. There are several websites you can use for just this purpose. You need to distinguish between the things you have to have and the things you want to have. A good way to do this is to write down every purchase you make over a two weeks span and put them in a want or need category. This will show you how your money is being spent. If you are able to do this budget without waiting a week or two then by all means do it now. The quicker you get a budget made the better it will be for you.
The “wants” list is where are the major cuts are going to be made in order to budget your money. You will need to eliminate any thing on the list that is unnecessary. If you have cable with all the available movie channels chances are you do not watch all these channels very often. You should cut out any channels that you do not watch regularly. Each channel may only save you three or four dollars but once you cut out a lot of three and four dollar items you will start to see a big difference.
You also need to evaluate things such as Internet service, home phone service, and cell phone service. There are usually many companies that offer the same thing at a cheaper price. If you have a home phone and cell phone is this really necessary. If not then one of them should go. Try to buy the cheaper options of anything when it is available. If you are clothing shopping ask yourself “Do I really need designer jeans?” Chances are that another pair of jeans will fit just as nicely and cost half the price.
When you are making your budget you have to be realistic about the whole thing. Do not make a budget that you can not live with on a day to day basis because you will just give up on it. You should also cut up any credit cards you may have or at the very least put them away and out of your immediate reach. A good idea when budgeting money is to give you a little spending money. This will keep you from trying to cheat on the budget. Have a small allotted amount that you can spend and only carry that much with you and carry it in cash.
If you are carrying a debit or credit card you could be tempted to go over your allotted amount. You may find that you lack self control in this area. This only means that you have to try a little harder. You do not want to give up just because you strayed from the budget. You need to also set goals such as no new clothes for two weeks. After those two weeks is up and you did not buy any clothes then you can reward your self by purchasing a small piece of affordable clothing.
A spending diary is a great idea. It is similar to the budget of needs and wants that I mentioned earlier. You will want to keep track of all receipts and money spent. A budget diary makes it easier to see what money is going out and for what. This will show you if you are sticking to your budgeting plan. Another great idea is to save money. Open a savings account and treat it just like a bill. Decide on an amount of money to place in the account every week or pay period. Make sure to put that money in the savings account as soon as you can. Direct deposit can be set up for this and is usually a great way to go about it. You never actual have the money in your hand so it is easier to act like you do not have it.
Do not get tempted to withdraw this money. When something happens and you need cash quickly you may be tempted to go straight to your savings account. If you do that then it is pointless to have a savings account. Saving money can be difficult right now so you do not have to put in a large amount every pay period. Instead put in a small amount that you will not miss. Twenty dollars a week may not seem like much to you now but over time this money will accumulate and you will be glad you did it.
Our homes are another place that we spend way too much money. There are ways to save money in your home as well. You can start by doing any handy work around the house yourself. Professionals cost too much and most jobs are fairly easy to do yourself. You should also keep your thermostat turned down. If you are not at home you should turn the thermostat off completely. Fans are a great way to substitute air conditioners. If you do not feel that fans keep your home cool enough while you are gone, you can check into programmable thermostats. This will allow you to set your thermostat to come on however often you need. Turn off lights, I can not stress this enough. When you exit rooms always turn the light off behind you, even if you will be coming back to that room in a few minutes. In the winter time you can try keeping the temperature set at just a little cooler and add a blanket or two extra on the bed.
